We consciously avoid the following toxins while formulating our products. Many of these toxins are frequently found in several popular brands which we have been using for decades. In fact, many 'Natural' / 'Herbal' / 'Ayurvedic' / 'Organic' brands also include these ingredients by misleading consumers. We have created a detailed list of these toxins to enable consumers to make the right choice for themselves while choosing their skincare products.


 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Makes a product foamy.

REASON TO AVOID:

Sulphates damage the skin’s immune system by causing layers to separate and inflame. Causes irritation.

FOUND IN:

Shampoo, facial cleansers, body wash, bubble bath, baby bath and toothpaste.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laurel Ether Sulfate, Anhydrous Sodium Laurel Sulfate

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Used as preservatives.

REASON TO AVOID:

Parabens disrupt hormone function by mimicking estrogen. Paraben use has also been linked to reproductive issues.

FOUND IN:

Makeup, moisturizers, hair care products, foundations, sunscreens.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propyl paraben, butylparaben

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Used for conditioning.

REASON TO AVOID:

Mineral oil is considered comedogenic - it clogs pores. Mineral oil can also be carcinogenic.

FOUND IN:

Lotions, ointments, creams, makeup products, beard oils, hair oils

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, isoparaffin, synthetix wax, LLP

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Used as a plasticizer.

REASON TO AVOID:

Phthalates often cause allergies in children. Phthalates can also disrupt hormones & cause fertility issues.

FOUND IN:

Shampoos, perfume, nail polish, hair spray, body washes, color products

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Phthalate, diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), some artificial fragrances

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Blending agent.

REASON TO AVOID:

Ethanolamines are carcinogenic and linked to various cancers. They also cause organ system toxicity.

FOUND IN:

Soaps, shampoos, hair conditioner, dyes, lotions, shaving cream, makeup

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA), cocamide MEA, lauramide DEA

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Used as preservatives.

REASON TO AVOID:

BHA and BHT can cause endocrine disruption, organ-system toxicity and irritation. They also cause allergies.

FOUND IN:

Lip treatments, color cosmetics, fragrances, moisturizers, deodorants.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluen

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Absorbs UV radiation.

REASON TO AVOID:

Benzophene has been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity. Also causes irritation.

FOUND IN:

Chemical sunscreens, nail polish, lip treatments, foundations, moisturizers.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Benzophenone, oxybenzone, sulisobenzone, sulisobenzone sodium

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Skin lightening.

REASON TO AVOID:

Hydroquinone can cause cancer and organ-system toxicity. It also causes respiratory tract irritation.  

FOUND IN:

Cleansers, skin lighteners, moisturizers, skin lightening products.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Hydroquinone, tocopherol acetate

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Binding agent.

REASON TO AVOID:

Coal tar dyes are human carcinogens, contaminated with heavy metals toxic to our body. Often causes irritation/rashes.

FOUND IN:

Hair dyes, color cosmetics, shampoos, scalp treatments, soaps, lotions

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

Coal tar solution, tar, coal, carbo-cort, naptha, benzin B70, petroleum benzin, estar, KC 261

 

 

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Antimicrobial properties.

REASON TO AVOID:

Triclosan causes endocrine disruption. It can also lead to bioaccumulation and thus cause toxicity.

FOUND IN:

Antibacterial soaps and detergents, deodorants, toothpaste, creams

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:

PURPOSE/USAGE:

Skin whitening.

REASON TO AVOID:

Mercury and mercury compounds can cause serious problems such as organ system toxicity. Also injures nerves,

FOUND IN:

Skin whitening creams, lotions, soaps, eye mascara, eye makeup cleansing products

HOW TO IDENTIFY ON A LABEL:
